The Paul Skenes 1/1 Superfractor Was Pulled By A Collector While In Line At Dunkin Donuts!

Here's the story

Dee Dee posted in the Sports Card Nonsense Facebook group that she and her husband had pulled the 2024 Topps Chrome Update Paul Skenes Rookie Debut 1/1 Superfractor. Normally posts on that that group end up with a huge percentage of negative comments, but this one was overwhelming positive.

She told part of the story in that post, and I reached out to Dee Dee to hear more.

She and her husband went to their Local Card Shop, Underdog Collectibles in Knoxville, Tennessee, to trade in some Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani MVP buyback cards.

“I decided to get a couple of packs with our buyback cards,” Dee Dee said. “I chose one pack of Topps Chrome because I really wanted another buyback card of Judge or Ohtani and I also got two packs of the Topps Chrome Update.”

They left the LCS, but they can never wait to get home to open packs.

“I wanted coffee, and Dunkin Donuts is in the same parking lot as the card shop so my husband was driving and we were going through the drive thru.”

She opened the first pack and uncovered a Judge. “I was so excited!”

And then she opened the Chrome Update pack. “I always go slow. Just what I do. The second or third card, I saw gold.”

But she wasn’t sure what she had yet.

“My husband and I thought it was maybe numbered to 50, but as I slowly looked at the card, I saw Pirates. In my mind, I was thinking there is no way that this is Skenes. As soon as I saw his arm, I knew it was him.”

And then she saw the 1/1 on the bottom right corner of the front. Her husband had just pulled them up to the Dunkin window when she realized she had pulled the Superfractor.

“I screamed, my husband may have cussed a little and the poor lady in the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru must have thought we were both crazy.”

After getting their coffee order, they immediately went back to the card shop to share the experience with them. “The manager and the other workers are really nice guys.”

When she walked in, one of them said, “Uh oh! She got something!”

He asked if it was a Holliday auto and Dee Dee said she thought it was better. Another guy asked if it was a Skenes auto, and Dee Dee said, “I think it may be better!”

“Better than a Skenes auto?” he asked.

Dee Dee pulled out the card. “Everyone yelled and got super excited for us. It was truly a moment that we will never forget!

Dee Dee didn’t even want to go to the LCS in the first place, even though she loves going. Her mom had been sick and in the hospital, and she’s worn down. She had just gotten the family Christmas tree up, and that was the latest she had ever put it up.

Dee Dee is disappointed because she later realized that their dashcam may have caught their reaction to pulling the card, but when she went to check she discovered that the memory card filled up just 10-15 minutes before they pulled the card.

So what’s she going to do with the card? The comments on the post hint at that:

What could the card be worth? The 2024 Bowman Chrome Skenes Superfractor sold for just shy of $10,000 two weeks ago. That might be the best comparable sale for now, but a PSA 10 of the 2023 Bowman Chrome Draft Superfractor (also non-autographed) sold for $63,000 in August.

The Skenes 2023 Bowman Chrome Draft Superfractor auto sold for $123,220 in September, after selling for $80,520 in June.

The 1/1 Superfractor auto of Skenes was pulled recently, too, but the owner reportedly doesn’t plan to sell it. They might change their mind when they see that PSA 10 grade pop:

The one everyone is trying to pull is the MLB Debut patch auto. My colleague Horacio Ruiz tried to figure out the value of that one.

For now, Dee Dee seems to be enjoying the moment.
