Giving Away PSA-Slabbed Yaz & Bo Jackson Cards!

I really dislike selling cards, and I’ll be doing enough of it in the coming months. I would prefer to give away cards to you, my readers, viewers, and subscribers.

So over the next six weeks I will select one newsletter subscriber per week, and they will each win one free PSA-slabbed baseball card.

Five of the cards are of Carl Yastrzemski, and one is Bo Jackson’s Rated Rookie card.

Sorry about the terrible photo

To win, all you need is to be subscribed! I’ll announce the first winner next Monday, and the winner can email me their address and select which of the six they want. And each week’s winner can select from the remaining cards. Simple!

How Will eBay / PSA Handle “Perfect Replica” Cards?

This eBay seller created what appear to be Etsy-made fake PSA slabs featuring counterfeit 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth and 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan cards:

Do you see the catch? He admits in the title that it’s a) a reprint, and b) a “perfect replica.”

Historically, eBay has been okay with these, for some reason. Maybe because it’s impossible to do anything about all the listings like this. But this seller actually uses legit PSA certification numbers, which is bold.

In case it’s not clear, here is how it appears this scam works:

  1. Seller counterfeits or buys a counterfeit Goudey Ruth (Etsy is loaded with counterfeits that can be purchased cheap)

  2. Seller finds a legit Goudey Ruth in a PSA slab

  3. Seller pays for a counterfeit PSA slab with the relevant information printed on the label, including the certification number from the legit Ruth

  4. Seller lists it on eBay, acknowledging it’s a reprint, knowing that a lot of people either won’t notice that or won’t know what it means, has has success! At the time of my screenshot, the listing was bid up to $300

  5. Seller hopes it gets through the Authentication Program because there are so many loopholes (I have a PO box, so my recent purchase bypassed the AP)

I posted about it on Twitter, asking PSA and eBay how they would handle it as part of the Authentication Program, and PSA very quickly deactivated the relevant certifications. They did not acknowledge the tweet in any way.

eBay responded that they were looking into it, and it appears that they did remove the two offending listings. The seller hasn’t relisted them but has listed other cards that appear legit.

Vermont Collection Update

Now that I’m back into my normal routine, I’ve started making player lots out of the 20,000 or so HOFer cards from the collection:

Some of these lots won’t be big enough to do anything with, some will get donated to viewers, and some will get sold.

I’ve watched a ton of Olympics coverage this weekend while working on this. I’m suddenly an expert on women’s beach volleyball.

Horror Movie Brief Review of the Week

I am a horror movie aficionado, and I have a new goal of watching one per week. I’ve watched nine in the last five weeks!

The one I watched this weekend was The Stepfather, starring Lost’s Terry O’Quinn. I went in with low expectations. It’s from 1987, after all. But I found it to be surprisingly tense throughout! And the movie built and released the tension really smartly, leading to a satisfying conclusion.

4 out of 5 stars

And here are the movies I watched during my month off (instead of doing more videos), and how I rated them:

Train to Busan: 4.5 stars

Midsommar: 4

Green Room: 4.5

Creep: 3.5

Creep 2: 3.5

Longlegs: 2.5 (and that might be generous)

Abigail: 3.5

The Night House: 2

The biggest highlight from the week was my conversation with Chris Sewall:
