eBay Seller Tried Selling Empty SGC Slab!

Plus, giveaway winner #5!

Hi! I’m trying something new this week with a Saturday delivery. I also didn’t have time for #98 on my ACE100 list, but that will come next week.

My friend Jon texted me something I had never seen before: an eBay listing for an empty slab:

“Slab only.”

The listing was “only” for $25, so that’s better than if it had been an auction. It’s hard to see how someone could be hoodwinked by this like they so often are by counterfeited cards, but I often overestimate people and underestimate the shadiness of others.

Thankfully, as auburn35 so helpfully reported, the listing came down and SGC deactivated the cert after I tweeted about it:

Some people, though, thought it was completely harmless to sell an empty slab. I strongly disagree. Bad actors could easily buy it, slide a counterfeit card in there, and sell it to some unsuspecting buyer through Facebook Marketplace or another service that doesn’t authenticate SGC slabs like eBay does.

Someone else likened this to selling vintage Topps wrappers, saying it’s always suspicious. I disagreed there, too, because vintage wrapper collectors (like me) put them in binders. There are no “empty slab collectors,” as far as I know or can imagine. (Please email me if you are one! I have questions.)

So, tell me:

Can anything good come from selling an empty slab?
