Attainable Collection of Envy 100 Gets Started

Plus giveaway winner #3!

On Monday I released my #100 in my Attainable Collection of 100 list. I’m linking it here, but I’ll also release a newsletter later this week with all the details. In case you’ve forgotten, here are the details on the list:

I made a list of the greatest athletes of all-time, across all sports, and picked the one card per athlete that I would love to have in my collection. I want them so much that when I see them in someone else’s collection, I get envious.

Who made the list? I can’t say that now, but it’s not just the best athletes, but also the ones that families talked about the most around the dinner tables or coworkers talked about around the watercooler. Fame counts on my list.

There are also some famous cards in the list. Not many, but a few.

So what makes them attainable, like the name implies? You need to be able to buy each of the 100 cards for a maximum of $5,000. “Whoa whoa whoa, Mike, $5,000 is not affordable,” you’re saying right now. And I get it! Before this year, the most I had ever spent on a card was $450, and now it’s $1,150. Can I really see myself spending almost $5,000 on a single card? No! But if I save long enough and really want it, I think I can get there.

And only a handful are over $2,000. The total minimum cost of cards on the list, all in PSA slabs due to the ease of finding historical sales for PSA, is $90,000. That’s $900 per card, on average. Buy them raw or in SGC slabs, and it’s much less. And shop carefully and you can do even better. I already have on quite a few.

I believe 62% are vintage (roughly pre-1981), and about 80% are rookie cards. These are my jam, so they get my focus.

Each video will cover the athlete’s accomplishments (or the card’s history), the value of the card, and anything else I find relevant. When I announced this list, a lot of people said I should do 5-10 cards per week and speed it up, but that doesn’t fit what I want to do; I want to give a meaty overview of each athlete and card. I want to learn things, and I want you to as well.

This is a list of all men; women will have their own list that I will start in the near future. And I worked with Bryan, Rob, and Ryan Nolan on a non-sports list that I’ll start soon too.

No cards from the last ten years appear on the list, because I don’t believe an athlete or a card can be good enough in under ten years to qualify for this list.

Remember, this is my list. I welcome you to share comments and thoughts on each video as they come out each week. Disagreements are encouraged. Who would be in your top 100? What cards?

Junk Wax Hero Merch?

Semi-inspired by John Mangini, I think I finally have a solid merch/slogan idea, and think I would put it on shirts, sweatshirts, bags, etc. So I ask you:

Would you buy JWH merch?

Credit Where Credit Is Due

I am frequently critical of PSA, so I like to give them credit when they do something good. In this case, I (and others) alerted them to a 1964 Topps Hank Aaron that had been mislabeled as a much-rarer Venezuela Topps Aaron, and they pulled the listing and are presumably going to fix the label since it’s still in their vault.

No, this does not mean that I will become one of their affiliate marketers that you’re probably starting to see around YouTube.

Comment of the Week

Me: “Let’s have some cheap fun!”

Upcoming Videos

I feel like I’m back in a groove again, and have some videos ready to go, but being back to work may put a crimp in that. At the very least I should have a big mail day of various collectibles coming up. Plus another Attic Find Friday!

I hope to have a vintage PSA reveal late in the week, but it may be next week when I receive them back.

I’ll also be live with Pepino Man on 4 Collectors Wednesday night at 8pm ET! Please come and join in the comments if you’re able.

Channel Highlights From the Past Week

I visited Don’s Sports Cards Center again, and it has been my most-watched video since The National:

A really cool Attic Find Friday story:

August resulted in my lowest views since December, which isn’t surprising because I didn’t do a whole lot. I have a lot in the hopper, though, so I’m hoping to have some fun in September.

My Pickup Of The Week

You’ll need to watch my video on Tuesday or Wednesday, but here’s a preview:

Yes, there are cards too.

Brief Horror Movie Reviews

I managed to watch two short horror movies during my vacation.

The first was a free one that’s been going viral on YouTube called Milk and Serial, a found-footage film that cost $800 to make. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I will just say that it was really good, and is only 62 minutes long.

The other was Bodies Bodies Bodies (trailer here), which I watched on Netflix. This one was wildly entertaining and unpredictable, even though I didn’t really like any of the characters and didn’t understand the lingo of 20-somethings anymore.
