April Fool's Pranks Are Fun
Plus: don't be a card jerk
Happy Monday, collectors! Here’s my latest for On SI: Rare Ty Cobb Rookie Card Sold With Over 1 Million Other Cards. I wish they had given me more details, but that Cobb is so cool.
Early last April I realized I had missed my opportunity to do a prank Attic Find Friday on April Fool’s Day. I set a reminder on my calendar for mid-March 2025 so I could start putting it together. Surely a legendary find involving 1990 Donruss, the one sealed wax box I own, would be hilarious.
But then John Mangini did it, and probably better than I would have:
Sure, it’s short, but it’s funny and he’s actually pulling cards out of his attic. I can’t even get to my attic because the entry is in my 15-year-old’s closet. Have you ever seen a 15-year-old’s closet??
So the reminder popped up a couple of weeks in advance, but I had nothing. I snoozed it for a week, and then for another. On March 31st I realized I needed to go to the office on April 1st, so I’d need to throw something together that day and post it early in the morning.
I’ve always been a fan of absurdist humor, and I love saying outrageous things with a straight face. Sometimes I forget that not everyone is going to get the joke.
I grabbed my 1990 Donruss box, gave about 3 minutes of thought to the prank and a gag or two, and propped up my camera to start filming:
I thought it was obvious! The gags got progressively more outrageous and stupid. (“My boy Nat,” anyone?) I even called it “Totally Unbelievable” and repeated it a couple of times during the video.
The thumbnail was another tip of the cap to the joke. I hate “O face” thumbnails!
But as the comments started rolling in, I was surprised to find that maybe 25% of people believed it. I never intended for people to believe it.
A lot of commenters said they believed it but only until the photo of the man with baseball cards in a cave. So I guess that was the tipping point.
It was actually the first AI-generated image I’ve ever created. It took me two tries because the first guy was too young:

Here’s what I ended up with:

Nice Mickey Mantle card
That led to this hilarious text from Jake from Wax Pack Wisdom:

There were a couple of hilarious comments too:

Speaking of The Pennysleever…

They now carry sleeves specific to the following sets:
Don’t Be These People
This guy posts a hit he’s really happy with to the toxic Sports Cards Nonsense Facebook group:

And here are the top two comments:

You don’t need to disparage someone else’s card. It is, in fact, possible to just not comment.
Don’t be a jerk.
Advice: post these things to a more welcoming community like Mantel instead.

🎬 Channel Highlights From the Past Week
This commenter actually appears to have actually unsubscribed due to my April Fool’s video:

I also received this wonderful comment on the prior week’s Attic Find Friday video:

I also received one that called this video a “snoozefest”:
Fun week!
Oh, and I reached 100k views on a single video for the first time:

🎁 My Pickup Of The Week
No preview, but I do have a pretty big pickups video. No single big card, but several small-big cards. I’m excited for it.
I’m also bidding on a big BIG card, but I don’t want to say what it is because I don’t want to encourage other bidders.
👻 Brief Horror Movie Review of the Week
I watched “Fresh” and while it was fairly predictable, there were enough surprises and the climax was intense.
3.5 out of 5 stars
If you’re reading this early Monday morning, I may be watching the season finale of White Lotus at the same time. Doubt I’ll have time to finish the entire 90-minute episode before work starts, though.
Interestingly, Charlotte Le Bon plays pivotal roles in both.
